Seniors: Preventing Falls

Published by Stephen on October 24, 2008 Under fall prevention

As we age, there are many parts of our body that do not work like they once did. Many times osteoporosis, which is a type of calcium deficiency, results in weak bones and diseases like arthritis can make it hard to grasp things with our hands or bend our knees. As a result not only are falls among seniors much more common, they can also be incredibly difficult to recover from. This is why it is very important to prevent these falls before they occur.

There are many areas around the home that can be dangerous to a senior. One of the most dangerous is areas of differing elevation. The most common area is the stairs, which is also the most dangerous place in the home for seniors. All areas of stairs should be clearly marked with a colored grip tape. Throw rugs should generally be avoided, but this is especially true near the stairs. In many cases, if a person is affected by macular degeneration, they can still safely use the stairs, so clearly marking them with tape might be sufficient. If the individual is affected by a mobility related disease, such as arthritis, it might be necessary to install a stair lift, which is a device installed along the stairs that carries a person between floors.

While the stairs represent the most dangerous place for a senior, there are quite often other areas of differing elevation in a home. There might be a step down into the living room or perhaps between the kitchen. Many times the hearth around a fireplace is also raised. All of these areas should also be clearly marked with an easy to see textured tape.

We spoke briefly about throw rugs and how they should not be used near the stairs, but generally they should be removed. Many falls happen as the rug slips on the floor or if a corner of it is turned up. One exception to this is the bathroom. While you should never use a throw rug, it is a good idea to install a plastic safety mat onto the floor. These mats are designed not to slip and because they are textured they are less slippery when wet.

Inevitably water will get on the bathroom floor and this can lead to falls. It is important to prevent as much water from getting on the floor as possible though. Make certain that a quality bath curtain is installed. If at all possible a shower door should be used, because they are much more effective at preventing spillage. It is also important to dry off in the shower or bathtub first, it might be a good idea to invest in some extra absorbent towels, to make this easier.

In addition to using quality non-skid bathmats in the bathroom, it is also a good idea to install grab bars throughout the entire bathroom. This includes inside the bathtub, around the toilet and spaced periodically on the wall. Make certain that they are securely anchored in place.

It is very important to prevent accidents before they happen. A fall can be very devastating for a senior, so it is very important to fall proof the house first.
