Preparing to Buy a Stair Lift

acornstairliftOf all areas in a home, the staircase presents the most danger to a senior. Fatal accidents most often occur on the stairs, as do the majority of hospitalizations due to accidents. Finding ways to prevent falls on the stairs, while still allowing safe and independent usage of the stairs is a very important concern, which is why many people use stair lifts.

Stair lifts are a type of medical lifting aid that can make using the stairs safe again. They do all the hard work of actually moving up or down the stairs, while the occupant must only remain seated and enjoy the ride. However, for those who can not use a regular seated stair lift, a standing model is available. There is also a model of stair lift, called an incline platform lift, which can be used by people in wheelchairs.

The actual operation of a stair lift is usually fairly straightforward. Most provide two wireless remote controls and a wired hand control. The wired hand control is actually attached to the stair lift itself and the wireless remote controls are typically attached to the wall at the top and bottom of the stairway. In this way, the wireless remote controls can be used as call and send controls, much like those found on an elevator.

All of the controls make use of constant pressure switches, which require that the button be depressed while the stair lift is in motion. This is a safety feature that ensures that if something happens and the remote is dropped or perhaps the person looses their position, the stair lift will stop moving.

In addition to constant pressure switches, most stair lifts also have special sensors located in the footrest. These sensors detect objects on the stairs that might interfere with the movement of the stair lift. If it detects something, the stair lift can be instantly reversed, but will not be able to move forward until the path has been cleared.

Choosing a stair lift is an important decision and one of the main considerations should be the requirements of the occupant. This of course involves considering the weight of the rider, but also what type of chair will be comfortable and of proper size.

The overall distance of the staircase can also be a factor. It is a good idea to have a general idea of the overall length of the staircase. Knowing the other dimensions, such as the width of the staircase, can also help narrow down the options available, although many stair lifts come with folding footrests and chairs, to save space when the lift is not in use.

Stair lifts are a great option for seniors and others who have difficulty using the stairs. They can be operated easily and are a cost effective alternative to a residential elevator.
